Boat Building is a “Sink AND Swim” workshop that explores the physics of boat building by creating flotation structures.

Kids learn how to use planning, engineering, woodworking, and critical thinking to create functional boats and models. They explore traditional and experimental methods based on their own sensibilities. Boats will be created mainly out of found materials. We create blueprints and small model floats, steering mechanisms, as well as an actual float which will be tested in the waters of Brooklyn.

The class culminates in a Maiden Voyage on June 9th, where kids will set sail at Plumb Beach.

Plumb Beach, located at the Belt Parkway between Exits 9 and 11, Brooklyn, NY 11229, is a stretch of shoreline, tidal mudflat, low salt marsh areas, a tidal lagoon, a dune system and woodland thickets at the entrance to Gerritsen Creek adjacent to the Belt Parkway, managed by the National Park Service.
