Our Inventor’s Lab classes are located the intersection of science and the arts! Our goal is to spark scientific inspiration through a FUN, exploratory, hands on creative learning process. All of our classes are grounded in our Core Values and arts-based pedagogy. Koko NYC founder Monika Wuhrer will be teaching both classes for the 2017-18 school year!
SIMPLE MACHINE LAB
Our Simple Machine Lab explores the time periods when each of the six basic simple machines was invented (inclined plane, wedge, lever, wheel and axle, screw, pulley) and replicates some of the same problems faced by the original innovators -from the Stone Age to the Renaissance- as we uncover the circumstances that led to the moment of creation. As we learn about each simple machine we will build on our knowledge and skills as inventors. We will practice problem solving and creative solutions in an arts-based, fun, collaborative environment. The workshop will also include learning about artists that are also scientists -from Renaissance artists such as Leonardo da Vinci to contemporaries Fischli and Weiss – who will inspire the group to create their own inventions at the end of the workshop.
EXTRAORDINARY MACHINE LAB
Imagine a sports team of scientists, artists and innovators. In this ten-week after school workshop, we will work together as a team to design and build a large-scale interactive sculpture that works like a compound machine with cranks, gears and levers. We will combine a foundation of learning about six simple machines (inclined plane, wedge, lever, wheel and axle, screw, pulley) with inspiration from our local environment here in Brooklyn. Found objects will be taken apart and repurposed as our building materials. Kids will learn engineering skills as they create and innovate together in a fun and collaborative environment. The final creation will be a semi-permanent 3-D installation at our new space that kids can enjoy and take pride in for months to come.
